I trained in clinical psychology at the University of Liverpool and have worked in the field since 1983. Most of that time has been spent working with people who are experiencing audiological or vestibular disorders such as tinnitus, hearing loss or balance problems.
I worked at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals (part of UCLH) for over 40 years; this was previously known as the Royal National Throat Nose & Ear Hospital.
After training as a clinical psychologist I obtained a PhD from the City University on the subject of psychological aspects of tinnitus and hearing loss. I also studied for a post-graduate diploma in cognitive behaviour therapy at the University of Oxford (and obtained a Distinction). I went on to train in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy with University of Bangor University.
Alongside my work in audiological and vestibular disorders I spent many years working in adult mental health and in neuropsychology with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
I hold an honorary academic position at the Ear Institute, University College London.
I have been a member of the faculty of the European Tinnitus Course, an internationally respected instructional course on tinnitus, for over 30 years and acted as co-director of the course director for many years.
